    • James met and married Emily Smith in Brisbane 1894 aged 22 years. He was working in a Birchley's Grocery shop on Boundary Rd West End. The young couple lived at 6 Fort Lane, West End with Emily's father, Napoleon Smith. They moved to Wynnum in 1901 to manage Birchleys Grocershop, Cnr Florence St. & Bay St. They lived in a house in Florence St which many years later was raised and a shop built under.

They built a home in Cedar St. Wynnum which remained in the family for many years eventually becoming the home of James & Emily's grandson Kenneth Short & family before being sold. James formed a partnership with Craig, a neighbour in Walnut St. whose property back the block in Cedar St. and they built a shop on the cnr. of Bay Tce & Edith St. Wynnum. "Short & Craig - Grocers" the property is still standing but modernized, over the years it became a chemist and a mensware shop. The original sign on roof was still legible in the late 1950's.

A business trip to Sydney in 1914 resulted in James Henry contracting and dying from Typhoid Fever. His partner bought out his share in the business from widow Emily (Smith).

The boys Allen and Edward were young men at the time of their fathers death. (19 & 13yrs.) After the loss of James Henry in 1914, Emily bought and ran a 2 story boarding house in Chestnut St. Wynnum, moving from there to another boarding house in Water St. Sth Bne. Then to 1 Withington St. East Brisbane to live with Alice & Elsie Taylor (daughter in law Ruth's mother & sister) where she stayed till she married family friend, William Sidney Austin in 1930.

Emily and Bill spent their honeymnoon on a cruise to England on the SS "Moreton Bay" departing 15 feb 1930. They visited with the English branch of the Short family. Letters from this family in 1936 speak fondly of the visit. They returned to Australia on the SS "Hobsons Bay" 16 Nov. 1930. They lived in the Cedar St. Wynnum home till Bill and then Emily passed away.

Bill Austin as he was known to the family was a long time friend of James Henry, they either met on board ship while coming to Australia or boarded together at Templetons in Hardgrave Rd. West End. Emily was a friend from school of his wife, she died in Mar. 1928. Bill Austin was part owner of a bedding factory "Lloyd, Austin & Taite" somewhere in the Sth Brisbane area. This was sold possibly prior to his marriage to Emily. Bill Austin was a keen artist of some renown in the local community. One of his paintings of early Brisbane was featured in a National Bank Calendar. Several of his paintings of the Wynnum foreshore hung in the Richard St. family home for many years. A journal of the voyage to England includes many clever charactatures of fellow passengers. Bill was an active member of the Wynnum Lawn Bowls club and Emily of the Wynnum Crocquet club. When Bill passed away his first family's home in Dornoch Tce, Highgate Hill was left to Emily. It eventually was bequeathed to her son Edward (Ted) who converted and maintained it as flats until his death.

Emily was known as "Grandma" to her family.
