Obituary: LEONARD, Rebecca Jane

There passed away, early on good Friday morning, at her residence, Fry Street, Grafton, a lady, in the person of Mrs. Rebecca Jane Leonard, who had been a lifelong resident of this city and district and who was held in the warmest esteem by a large circle of friends.

She was a daughter of the late Samuel Short and was actually a native of the Hunter River district, having been born at Nelson?s Plains nearly 73 years ago, but before her marriage in 1868 she was residing at Southgate, keeping house for her brothers.

After her marriage to Mr. Irwin Leonard, her home was at Alumny Creek for a great many years until Mr. Leonard, some 20 years ago, retired from farming and came, with his wife and family, into Grafton to live. Mr. Leonard died on March 26, 1918, pre-deceasing his wife by exactly three years all but one day. A grown-up family of two sons - Messrs. H. P. and W. S. Leonard, both of Great Marlow - and five daughters - Mesdames P. A. Scarr (Raymond Terrace) and A. L. Hotchkiss (Grafton) and the Misses Jennie, May and Kate Leonard - are left to mourn the loss of a devoted mother.

The late Mrs. Leonard had all her life been actively associated with the Methodist Church. For a great many years she was a teacher in the Sunday School, walking a long distance into Grafton each Sunday in performance of that duty, and right up to the last was an ardent supporter of, and a tireless worker for, the church. She had been in indifferent health for some time but was only seriously ill for about a week.

The funeral took place on Easter Saturday, when the remains were laid beside those of her husband in the Methodist portion of the Grafton Cemetery. The Rev. A. E. Walker conducted a brief service at the home prior to the funeral and also conducted her last rites at the graveside.
